fatty liver

What is fatty liver?

Fatty liver, also known as hepatic steatosis, is a condition where excess fat builds up in the liver. While it's normal for the liver to contain some fat, if more than 5-10% of the liver's weight is fat, it's considered a fatty liver. There are two main types of fatty liver disease:

Non-alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD): This occurs in people who drink little or no alcohol. It is the most common form of fatty liver disease and is often associated with obesity, type 2 diabetes, insulin resistance, and metabolic syndrome.

Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (AFLD): This is due to heavy alcohol consumption. Alcohol abuse can cause fat to build up in the liver, leading to inflammation and, eventually, more severe liver damage if not addressed.

Fatty liver can be asymptomatic, but some people may experience symptoms such as fatigue, weakness, weight loss, abdominal discomfort, and jaundice. Treatment for fatty liver typically involves lifestyle changes such as weight loss, healthy eating, increased physical activity, and reducing alcohol intake. In some cases, medication may be prescribed to manage symptoms and underlying conditions like diabetes and high cholesterol.

How is a fatty liver diagnosed?

Fatty liver is typically diagnosed through a combination of medical history, physical examinations, and various tests. The diagnostic process may include:

Medical History and Physical Examination: The doctor will review your medical history, including alcohol consumption, medications, and any underlying health conditions like diabetes or obesity. During a physical examination, the doctor may check for signs of liver enlargement or tenderness in the abdomen.

Blood Tests: Blood tests can help detect liver function abnormalities. Common tests include:

Liver Enzyme Tests: Elevated levels of liver enzymes (such as ALT and AST) can indicate liver inflammation or damage.

Complete Blood Count (CBC): To check for signs of infection or other blood-related issues.

Lipid Profile: To measure cholesterol and triglyceride levels.

Imaging Tests: Imaging techniques can help visualize fat accumulation in the liver. These include:

Ultrasound: A common, non-invasive method to detect fat in the liver.

Computed Tomography (CT) Scan: Provides detailed images of the liver and can detect fat buildup.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI): Offers detailed images and can measure the amount of fat in the liver.

Transient Elastography (FibroScan): This specialized ultrasound measures the stiffness of the liver, which can help determine the degree of liver fibrosis or scarring. It is particularly useful in assessing the severity of fatty liver disease.

Liver Biopsy: In some cases, a liver biopsy may be recommended to confirm the diagnosis and assess the extent of liver damage. During this procedure, a small sample of liver tissue is removed using a needle and examined under a microscope.

Early diagnosis is crucial to manage and prevent the progression of fatty liver disease to more severe conditions.

What are the symptoms of a fatty liver?

Fatty liver disease is often asymptomatic, especially in the early stages. However, as the condition progresses, some individuals may experience symptoms. Common symptoms of fatty liver disease include:

Fatigue: Persistent tiredness and a general feeling of low energy.

Abdominal Discomfort: Pain or discomfort in the upper right side of the abdomen.

Weight Loss: Unintentional weight loss that is not related to changes in diet or exercise.

Weakness: A general feeling of weakness or muscle weakness.

Enlarged Liver: The liver may become enlarged (hepatomegaly), which can sometimes be detected during a physical examination.

Jaundice: Yellowing of the skin and eyes, although this is more common in advanced liver disease.

Swelling in the Abdomen (Ascites): Buildup of fluid in the abdomen, typically seen in more advanced cases.

Swelling in the Legs (Edema): Fluid retention in the legs and ankles.

Dark Urine: Dark-colored urine, which can be a sign of liver dysfunction.

Confusion or Difficulty Concentrating: In severe cases, liver dysfunction can affect brain function, leading to confusion or difficulty concentrating (hepatic encephalopathy).

If you experience any of these symptoms, it is essential to seek medical advice for a proper diagnosis and appropriate treatment.

What are the normal treatments for a fatty liver?

The treatment for fatty liver disease focuses on managing the underlying causes and adopting lifestyle changes to reduce liver fat. Here are some common treatment approaches:

     Lifestyle Changes:

Weight Loss: Losing weight through a combination of a healthy diet and regular physical activity can significantly reduce liver fat. A gradual weight loss of 1-2 pounds per week is often recommended.

Healthy Diet: A balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins can help manage liver fat. Reducing the intake of sugar, refined carbohydrates, and saturated fats is also beneficial.

Exercise: Engaging in regular physical activity, such as brisk walking, jogging, or swimming, can help reduce liver fat and improve overall health. Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise per week.

     Management of Underlying Conditions:

Diabetes: Proper management of blood sugar levels through medication, diet, and exercise can help reduce liver fat.

High Cholesterol and Triglycerides: Medications and lifestyle changes to lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels can benefit liver health.

Hypertension: Managing high blood pressure through lifestyle changes and medications can help prevent further liver damage.

     Medications:

While there are no specific medications approved for treating fatty liver disease, doctors may prescribe medications to manage associated conditions, such as diabetes, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure. In some cases, vitamin E supplements or certain diabetes medications (like pioglitazone) may be recommended for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).

     Avoiding Alcohol:

For those with alcoholic fatty liver disease (AFLD), abstaining from alcohol is crucial to prevent further liver damage. Even for individuals with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, limiting alcohol intake can be beneficial.

     Regular Monitoring:

Regular follow-up appointments with a healthcare provider are essential to monitor liver function, assess the effectiveness of treatment, and make any necessary adjustments.

     Other Therapies:

In some cases, doctors may recommend additional treatments such as liver transplantation for those with severe liver damage or cirrhosis.

The key to managing fatty liver disease is early intervention and sustained lifestyle changes. Working closely with a healthcare provider can help develop a personalized treatment plan to address individual needs and improve liver health. If left untreated, fatty liver disease can progress to more serious conditions, such as non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), cirrhosis, and liver cancer.

How can acupuncture help patients with a fatty liver?

While research on the effectiveness of acupuncture for fatty liver disease (FLD) is still limited, some studies and clinical experiences suggest potential benefits, including:

Improving Liver Function: Some studies have indicated that acupuncture may help improve liver enzyme levels, which are often elevated in individuals with fatty liver disease. By promoting better liver function, acupuncture might assist in reducing liver fat and inflammation.

Reducing Inflammation: Acupuncture is thought to have anti-inflammatory effects. Since inflammation plays a key role in the progression of fatty liver disease, reducing inflammation can be beneficial in managing the condition.

Promoting Weight Loss: Acupuncture has been used as a complementary therapy for weight loss. By helping to regulate appetite and improve metabolism, acupuncture can support weight loss efforts, which is crucial for managing fatty liver disease.

Enhancing Insulin Sensitivity: Some research suggests that acupuncture may help improve insulin sensitivity, which can be beneficial for individuals with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), as insulin resistance is a common underlying factor.

Reducing Stress and Improving Sleep: Stress and poor sleep can negatively affect liver health. Acupuncture is known for its ability to reduce stress and improve sleep quality, which can indirectly benefit individuals with fatty liver disease.

Balancing Energy and Qi: According to traditional Chinese medicine, fatty liver disease may be related to imbalances in the body's energy (Qi) and organ systems. Acupuncture aims to restore balance and improve overall health by targeting specific acupuncture points.

Patients should continue to follow their healthcare provider's recommendations for lifestyle changes, medications, and other treatments. Additionally, individuals considering acupuncture should seek treatment from a qualified and licensed acupuncturist and discuss it with their healthcare provider to ensure it is a safe and appropriate option for their specific condition.

See what our patients says
Three weeks after a head on collision, I was suffering with severe neck pain and intense headaches. On my first treatment with Dr Zhang, I rated my pain an 8. After the treatment she asked me to rate my pain again and I couldn't identify even a 1. Complete relief after a single treatment. Between each treatment, when my muscles begin to spasm again, I use the essential oil blend she provided to massage the area and relieve the pain. It's going to take quite a few sessions, but, I am healing. The aromatic therapy she provides compliments the infrared and acupuncture to create a deep sense of relaxation. After experiencing such immediate results myself, I brought my daughter for treatment of some chronic symptoms she's had because I know she will feel heard, understood and cared for by Joanna.
- Michelle B., Torrance, CA*

Joanna is professional, knowledgeable and caring. I was referred to her by my husband's coworker. I was experiencing pain radiating down my arm, which has stopped due to her treatments. I was so impressed with my results that I am now bringing my father with me. He is 96 years old and experiences quite a bit of pain due to his arthritic knees. He is already experiencing relief after just a few treatments. I highly recommend Joanna for any and all acupuncture treatments.
